Gas has been a feature of everyday life in the Isle of Man since the 1830s, when it was first used to light streets by the Douglas Gas Light Company. Within 20 years there were gas companies in Ramsey, Port St Mary, Castletown and Peel. Gas became widely used, not only for lighting, but for heating, cooking and recreational purposes.

Major change did not happen until the 1960s. Then, LPG was imported for the first time and the gas reformer method of production was introduced. In 1999, Douglas Gas and Calor Manx Gas were merged to form today's Manx Gas Limited, a subsidiary of an international utilities group. Natural gas was introduced to the main Douglas and Onchan conurbation in a multi-million pounds investment which started in 2002.
